21st century skills

School in the 21st century                     

21st century school does not necessarily limit to a geographical location. While it is located in a certain location, it occupies a cyber space too where there are education resources and soft material stored in. Learning process may be implemented in traditional classes as well as online to which either teachers as well as students can attend learning sessions online. They may perhaps have options to access learning process in times of their ease. It will be an optional system while preserving individual institutions’ requirements. The learning process in 21st century  schools nurture 21st century skills such as critical thinking creativity, collaboration, different life skills which enable children to continue life- long learning. The school should facilitate the learners to be  should be  self directed and self-managed. 

In the journey towards achieving these goals, a school should be transform according to the following 5 pillars

  1. School climate should be a climate of achievement
  2. Community engagement at its maximum level.
  3. Distributed leadership   (While the  principal demonstrates personal and professional ownership of the vision  he or she has to effectively communicates how that vision shapes teaching and learning to the stakeholders. But the vision should be viewed as community property. All stakeholders must execute the vision with enthusiasm.)
  4. Active engagement of students
  5. Using research based /Project based approaches in fulfilling the mission.



  • 21 Century Students

  • The 21 century  student cohort belongs to   Generation Z and Generation Alpha. These two generations have grown up with advanced technology so commonly available in their homes as well as in schools. They are  called digital natives.
    • (Generation Z – born between 1995 and 2009 – most do not remember life without the internet, and are familiar with the  technology like smartphones, iPads, smartboards and other devices available.
    • Generation Alpha – born since 2010 – they are younger than smartphones, the iPad, 3D television, Instagram, and music streaming apps like Spotify.)
    • These students have unprecedented amount of information at their  fingertips. In other words  With so much access to resources of all kinds, they can invariably possess  more information than teachers on different topics, and be a step ahead of the technology in use.

  1. The above are globally accepted concepts. Therefore, first we have to explore the global definitions and then we can explore how we can localized the concepts in accordance with the needs and requirements of our system.
